My son is almost four and has had a lot of recent exposure to video games (for better or worse). He also knows that I’m a software engineer and that I’ve done some game development before he existed. As a result, coming up with game ideas is one of his favorite topics when I’m putting him to bed at night and he has narrowed in on his dream game in the past week or so.

I’ve said we’ll do it some day for weeks and figured now is probably as good a time as any (he asks me when daily). If we’re going to do this for real, I wanted to make something that met the following criteria:

  • easily accessible once completed
  • incorporated assets drawn / colored by my son
  • doesn’t require complex hosting / publishing
  • easy to pick up / implement

After some Googling, I landed on Phaser 3. I’ll be building the foudnations of the game over the next few days and hosting it here.
